Above and Below

Part of the White River in Indiana, Blue Springs Cavern is the largest underground river in the world. We were approached  by Maya to generate a topographical representation of the cavern using light weight  aluminum tubing.  Bathymetric data of the river bottom and terrain data of the cavern ceiling was gathered on a canoe/spelunking adventure through the cavern.  Maya Lin Studio then translated this data into a series of contour curves, which were then sent on to the Foundry.  The tubing was bent to carefully match computer-generated templates and mocked up in our studio space, then disassembled, labeled, and shipped to Indiana.  The final product, painted black, was installed over the course of a freezing cold week at the Indianapolis Museum of Art.
