Digital Operations

Assembly

After the individual sections of the model are machined they are assembled into their final size using high strength epoxy and adhesives. The surface is then carefully refined to the specifications of the artist. Often a thin wax or clay top coat is applied to allow for greater detail and richness. The piece is now ready to be molded and cast, or, as is the case sometimes, ready to be sealed as a final object. The urethane foam as well as the expanded polystyrene we machine are excellent enlargement materials. They are soft enough so that they are easily tooled and sanded, yet their high density gives them structural integrity. The foam itself becomes a lightweight structural armature for the sculpture.

The combination of our large assembly studio, specialty surfacing equipment, wide base of materials knowledge, and skilled technicians contribute to the successful completion of the digital enlargement process. Having the technology and equipment to scan, enlarge, and machine sculpture is only one aspect of the enlargement process. Having the facility and artisans to work closely with the artist in assembling and completing their project, is what gives our digital operations its vitality and strength.
